At least thirteen people killed and 98 wounded in rail accident in Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident took place on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this incident,” stated the head of state.

The official announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature public works project of the former leader, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's developmental agenda for the southern region.

Another massive rail project from that time, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the armed forces, marking a notable expansion of its duties in national infrastructure. They were completed at an fast-tracked pace, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that administration.

However, this rushed timetable had also sparked significant apprehensions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This involves an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Review and Suspension

In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a primary political opposition urged an immediate halt in the building and running of all similar projects.

This halt was suggested until the completion of a thorough safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "calls for swift accountability."

In response, the national leader asserted that the train had been functioning in complete accordance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these national undertakings.
